“It ain’t Houston, but it’s great Tex-Mex”
That was, actually, a quote from my friend who has spent time in Texas, as well a the last twenty years in various parts of Asia. He says Sunrise Tacos offers the best Tex-Mex in Asia. Sunrise Tacos has opened its first branch here in Jomtien. (The other five are in Bangkok.) It’s conveniently located at 413/134 Thappraya Road, at the entrance to Jomtien Complex and near the Shenanigans Jomtien branch. Another branch is slated to open in North Pattaya in the near future.
I started off with a 12-ounce frothy, thick frozen ‘Sunrise Gold Margarita’ (135 baht); so good I had another. Before we ordered, we were presented with a basket of homemade corn chips with salsa. There’s also a salsa bar with all your favorite sauces from hot to mild. The chips are made on the premises from three kinds of corn kernels: white, yellow and blue. There is a large selection of starters and salads to begin your meal. While we were waiting for our order, Gil, the friendly manager, brought us a plate of two kinds of quesadilla: chicken and pulled chicken. They really whet the appetite and were most welcome.
My friend ordered the Nachos Cheese Supreme (195 baht), as his main course. (It’s listed as a starter, but I dare you to eat all of it and still have room for another course.) He had it with chicken, atop a huge pile of corn tortilla chips, topped with three kinds of melted cheese, black beans, pico de gallo, cilantro, onions, jalapenos and sour cream. I ordered three build your own tacos (220 baht). I opted for soft, corn tacos. You fill out a card and check off the fillings you want. In addition to salsa, cheese, sour cream, lettuce, tomato, cilantro and chopped onions, you can choose from various meat or vegetable fillings. I tried chicken and two kinds of beef; and would be hard pressed to choose a favourite. They were all delicious. Our third dining companion ordered chicken fajitas and was quite satisfied.
The menu includes all kinds of tacos, burritos, fajitas, enchiladas and quesadillas. Other Mexican specialties are offered, as well as, American favourites and some tempting pies and other desserts. They also serve breakfast.
Sunrise Tacos is open daily from 10 am until midnight. Home delivery is available. (Phone: 038 303067; web site: www.sunrisetacospattaya.com ; Note-as of this writing, their web site was still under construction; but you can check out the identical menu at www.sunrisetacos.com )
