A walk through Pattaya’s Arab Quarter
Last night on my way home, I decided to take a detour through Pattaya's Arab Quarter, which now encroaches on Walking Street both through Soi Covent Garden and Soho Square, and through the small beer bar complexes between Walking Street and Marine plaza.
It was around 2am, and I was astonished by the aural and visual assault which greeted me as I walked through Marine Plaza. The music pounding from bars was ear-splittingly loud.
I wondered how patrons could talk to each other. Then I noticed an even greater communication problem. Arab customers were happily chatting to their friends not only over the music, but many also had COTTON WOOL in their ears, to prevent damage caused by the bone-shattering, cacophonous din.
I was also interested to see the style of the Arab oriented bar girls.
Well known for being rather on the “Rubenesque” side of weight gain, many wore their hair piled very high on their heads, and more mascara than Alice Cooper in his heyday, as they sat in small plump groups relaxing, talking, puffing on their hookas in shisha bars, draped over beer bar counters or waiting for punters on the sois.
I was also struck by how many ugly ladyboys were congregating at that time of night, presumably hoping to snare well-pissed punters who may not really have an eye for a pronounced adam’s apple, or who are actively looking for one at that time of night.
I did enjoy watching the exuberant Arab dancing going on in many of the hooka bars which seem to have proliferated in recent times.
These bars play more traditional Arab music than the ear bleed blasting from the beer bars.
As I progressed through the beer bar complex in Marine Plaza, the weird visual of seeing everything bathed in heavy red and pink neon light was a bit disorienting, especially combined with the shock waves fizzing up my body from the blasting music. It was like being on a trip, and I don’t mean to Blackpool.
I was also struck with the amount of money that has gone into creating some of the expensive-looking Arab joints in Marine Plaza, and the money being spent in them.
While many Arabs don’t drink, when in Pattaya, many do, and good luck to them. It’s not the worst vice here, but I was surprised by how many expensive bottles of high end scotch and brandy were on tables, as people relaxed and talked.
I didn’t see any signs of drunken moronic behaviour, especially of the kind I immediately witnessed as I came back onto Walking Street to be confronted by a group of four Russians, shirtless, too-tight shorts, 7:11 Changs in hand, falling over and shouting in Russian at the top of their voices as they stumbled along Walking Street banging into people as they went.
The thought occurred to me, as I watched the staggering Russians, was that maybe we need to create a "Russian Town" for this kind of behaviour.
Then I realised that we already have.
Unfortunately, it’s called Pattaya.

Fair play to the Arabs, they generally keep them selves to them selves and don't bother anyone, although I have no idea how much bother goes on in the Arab quarter!

The only things I remember are very occasional gang fights between different Arab nationaities, or Shia/Sunni in-fighting.

It's frightening that there is such a place as the "Arab Quarter". As far as I am concerned it is a turn for the worst. What next? An "Indian Quarter", "Iranian Quarter" etc. Forbid that there should be a "Farang Quarter"!!

The Arab Quarter as it's known has been a feature of Pattaya for as long as I can recall. It has expanded recently along Soi 16, but then again Soi 16 used to have nothing much until a few years ago. I can't say I've ever had a problem with the Arabs. I think most are deaf...the noise that emanates from the quarter simply prevents anything resembling conversation!

There already is a farang quarter and it is called soi bukhou or soi Lk Metro. I like the arab quarter have been walking past there for years either after parking my scooter or going back to collect it when in WS. Never seen any trouble and have never been bothered and it has been going strong for 5 years I know of.

Wow an Arab Qtr, Hey can we have an Aussie Qtr?. At least our music is pretty good and we dont all sit around a I dream of Jeanie Pot Mulling Up.
We tip well and normally are very polite so If you can zone somewhere on beach road that would be great.
I definitely wont be visiting unless I feel like a Kebab.

I certainly concur with your observation of the Russian misbehaviour. Whereever I go in Pattaya/Jomtien and happen to encounter them I find them to be a simply surly lot. In the Land Of Smiles they are guaranteed not to do so. The men glare and the women sneer from under their cropped bangs and look down their noses at all.
One evening upon a songtaew from Jomtien into Pattaya I was seated among three Russian couples and two chaps from New Zealand. As the songtaew crossed into Pattaya and continued north along 2nd Road it stopped a few hundred metres past Pattaya Tai. One of the Russian "ladies" began berating the driver to get moving. In answer the driver got out, presumably to pick himself up a quick snack at a nearby food cart. The Russki continued her tantrum, and the six of them got off the songtaew and walked into a shopping area, stiffing the driver of his owed 60 Baht. I and the two New Zealander's folled the Russkis in and caught up with them, loudly berating them and embarrassing them in the crowd enough to get them to return to the street to pay the driver his due.
I have no idea why so many of the Russians are so loud, obnoxious, impolite, surly, degrading, unsmiling and altogether unpleasant. Perhaps they have simply been unhappy people for so long they know of no other way than to spread their misery about. That so many are now buying up property in the area is frightening, as a proliferation of their ilk will only serve to drive away people who come to Thailand to SMILE, for whatever reasons.

Pattaya Arabs Quarters and not Squarters,
Pattaya was a Muslim Fisherman Land ,from 1905,
American Marines were the first visitors in 1950s after the second world war
Arabs from Phuket and Hatyai pay a visit in 1957 and build nice Masajid, and made
the beach clean and healthy place to relax,
1980s ,the Australians Retired people came and opened Bars ,
and 1984 Thai Government Protected the wealth and culture of pattaya Muslims,by anouncing that Pattaya is officially a Tourist Land for all the people over the world
so ,pattay is Cosmo Politan or .......
pierre
the arab district is nice and ok, but not my world. russian couples and families are nice, only groups of "single" men late at night are sometimes a problem. the biggest problem in pattaya...? to cross a street!
pierre, zurich, switzerland
Rob
I'm guessing you've just had your first visit to Pattaya because crossing the street is an absolute walk in the park and never overly challenging at all compared to say, Saigon or Hanoi. I guess in Zurich, the traffic stops at red lights and everything runs like a proverbial Swiss watch there!
pierre
no, dear rob, i come to pattaya often....the drivers are a big problem....to go from the beach walk to festival mall is hell.....
